Empowered Yoga for Men - InHale Yoga Studio, Altrincham

If you’re been curious about yoga but the thought of joining a mixed class puts you off, this men only class is your way in. You don’t need to be flexible, strong, or “fit” to start – this is about starting from where you are now - and building from there.

We’ll explore what yoga is beyond the stereotypes, working on strength, mobility, and balance in a way that’s practical and adaptable to your body. You’ll be encouraged to make choices that work for you, without pressure to force shapes or keep up with anyone else.

Many men find yoga offers benefits that feel different to the gym or team sports, such as:

  • Improved mobility and joint health for more efficient movement and fewer injuries.

  • Better body awareness and balance, which can boost performance in other sports or activities.

  • Reduced stress and tension – especially the kind that builds up from demanding careers or everyday pressures.

  • A calmer, more focused mind, helping you recover faster – not just physically, but mentally too.

This is an inclusive and supportive space to build confidence, learn the foundations, and experience how yoga can improve both body and mind – giving you the tools to step into any class in the future feeling ready.

Common Barriers For Men:

Common barriers that can prevent men from starting a yoga class include:

Perception of Yoga as Feminine: Many men perceive yoga as primarily for women, which can make men hesitant to participate due to concerns about their masculinity or feeling out of place in a predominantly female environment.

Physical Intimidation: Men may feel physically intimidated by yoga, especially if they believe they lack flexibility or strength compared to others in the class. This fear of not being able to keep up or perform poses correctly can be a deterrent to trying yoga.

Self-Consciousness: Men may feel self-conscious about their bodies, particularly in settings where they are expected to wear form-fitting clothing or be barefoot. This self-consciousness can be exacerbated by concerns about sweating, body odour, or appearing vulnerable in front of others.

Competitive Mindset: Some men approach fitness activities with a competitive mindset, viewing yoga as less challenging or "inferior" to other forms of exercise like weightlifting or team sports. This mindset may prevent men from appreciating the holistic benefits of yoga beyond physical fitness.

Stress and Mental Health Stigma: Men may be hesitant to seek out activities like yoga for stress relief or mental well-being due to societal stigmas surrounding men's mental health and the expectation to "tough it out" without seeking help.

Lack of Male Role Models: A shortage of male yoga instructors or prominent male figures in the yoga community can make it difficult for men to identify with the practice or feel represented, further reinforcing the perception that yoga is not for them.

We address these barriers by creating an inclusive and welcoming yoga space tailored to men's needs, offer education about the benefits of yoga, challenge stereotypes, and provide an opportunity to explore yoga in a supportive environment.

A Space Just for Men

In our Introduction to Yoga class, you'll be joining a community of like-minded men who are also discovering the transformative power of yoga. We recognise that the dynamics of a mixed class can sometimes feel intimidating or unfamiliar, which is why we've created a space where you can explore yoga at your own pace, free from judgment or pressure.

Breaking Down Stereotypes

Yoga is for every body, regardless of gender, age, or fitness level. Our Introduction to Yoga class aims to challenge these stereotypes by creating a space where men can feel comfortable expressing themselves, exploring movement, and connecting with their inner selves without fear of judgment.

Building Confidence and Resilience

Stepping onto the yoga mat can be a powerful act of self-care and self-discovery. Our classes are designed to help you build confidence, resilience, and a greater sense of well-being both on and off the mat. Through a combination of physical postures, breathwork, and meditation, you'll learn practical tools for managing stress, improving focus, and cultivating inner peace in your daily life.

Your Instructor for this class:

Steve Clark, Yoga Teacher

Steve Clark

Steve’s yoga journey began as a curious teenager who stumbled across a yoga book that opened a window into a vastly different world from the one he was growing up in. That spark led him to further explore eastern meditation, Kung Fu, and Chan Style Tai Chi in addition to yoga. In his 20s and 30s, Steve channeled his restless energy into extreme challenges – from arctic and desert expeditions to high-altitude endurance events – pushing his body and mind to his limits. But after multiple burnouts and injuries, he found himself coming full circle back to yoga, this time with a new focus: restoring balance, rather than chasing it.

For Steve, yoga isn’t about perfect postures – it’s about moving, breathing and living well. It’s a practice that builds strength and mobility, steadies a busy mind, and creates space to pause in the middle of life’s chaos. Hyperactive by nature, he’s found in yoga a way to experience stillness in movement and use breath as an anchor for the mind. Now in his 50s, Steve sees yoga as one of the most valuable tools for maintaining quality of life as we age – and believes it’s never too late to start. His classes are practical, inclusive, and adaptable to all levels, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.

Steve is currently a student teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY-38717), having completed 300 hours of training towards his 500-hour Teaching Yoga Diploma.

FAQs:

What does a typical class look like? We start the class by settling in and bringing our awareness to our body and our breath. Next we warm up the body and practice foundational postures before moving towards a peak posture where we work in finding balance, presence and stillness and unite the mind, body and the breath. We move down through some more foundational postures before finishing our practice with guided relaxation. Throughout the class we will also learn a little about the history and philosophy of yoga and how this ancient practice is still relevant in helping us to navigate our complex modern lives.

What do I need to wear? It is best to wear clothing that you feel comfortable in and that allows you to move freely. You may find some poses demanding and this may make you sweat, so a wickable sports type t-shirts may be more comfortable. We will spend most of the class in our bare feet.

What equipment do I need? All equipment can be provided at the studio but you may wish to bring your own yoga mat after the first class, which will be especially useful to continue your practice at home between classes.

How much do the classes cost? Classes cost £12 if paid for individually, or a block of 6 classes costs £60. Bookings and payment must be made online (online booking system coming soon).

What if I have an existing medical condition? Check with your GP that Yoga is a suitable activity for your condition prior to signing up. When booking I will ask you to complete a medical form so that I am aware of any injuries or illnesses which will allow me to make informed modifications to the poses for you.

Where are the classes held? Classes will be held in Hale/Altrincham, Cheshire. Dates and locations coming soon..

Do I need to be fit and flexible? Not at all, the class is beginner friendly and mixed ability with individual adaptions made for each posture to make them accessible to all.
